The Calaveras County Master Gardeners’ Demonstration Garden will be open. There is no plant sale this month. The topic this month is bare root perennial vegetables, such as asparagus and artichokes. Although most of our garden vegetables are planted each season from seeds (annuals), perennial vegetables also provide a great source of food. Since they are perennial they are also useful landscape additions. These plants are generally planted as bare root plants.

North Grove Guided Walk at Big Trees State Park

Docents/rangers offer a guided walk  through the North Grove area of the park. Enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the park while learning about why this place is so special. The walk is approximately 1.5 hours long and is free with paid admission to the park. When the snow covers the ground the walks become guided snowshoe walks. Snowshoes are provided free, first come first served. No reservations are allowed. Check in at the Warming Hut no later than 12:30 pm.

Opening weekend for Railtown 1897 SHP regular Steam Train Operationg Season. Grand Opening Festivities, both days. This weekend only, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne County residents ride trains for free (proof of residency required). Arrive at 7am and watch the crew prepare the train for the day in the historic roundhouse. Departures are at 10:30am, Noon, 1:30pm and 3pm. Special afternoon Wildflower Train departs at 4pm from the Railtown 1897 SHP Depot, after a short video presentation at 3:30pm, on these two Saturdays (April 11 & 18) only. Prior to boarding the train, passengers will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Once on board the train, naturalists will answer questions and point out wildflower grouping along the way.
