It’s been a Miracle March, thanks to the forces of El Nino, and the rains have resulted in a steady rise in the county’s reservoirs. It’s great news, especially for the new owners of Glory Hole Sports, who have just taken over the long standing business and will be hosting their “re-grand opening” on April 23.
Glory Hole Sports sits at the entrance to the Glory Hole Recreation Area at New Melones Lake, and for 20 years it has been the go-to spot for up to date fishing info, as well as providing a deep selection of gear, tackle and bait. Oh, and the deli… the tri-tip sandwiches are well known. Along with the gas station and convenience store, it’s an important stop for any recreational boater or Melones fisher.
When Gene Hildebrand and his partner Dawn Masters first saw the business over two years ago, they report the store had a “special feel” about it. “I wanted a business that was tied to recreation but was more than just a convenience store,” says Gene. The day he walked in and saw aisle after aisle of specialized fishing products, he knew this could be the place.
With the recent rains, Gene and Dawn have seen lots of enthusiasm for the spring boating and fishing season, business is brisk with people stopping in to greet the new owners and check in with the knowledgeable staff, all of whom have stayed on with the change.
Plans include ramping up the deli menu with smoked meats (tri-tip will definitely stay on the menu) and continuing to be a key resource for water conditions and fishing reports. Come see them on April 23 for their re-grand opening party; they’ll have fishing guides and fly-tying specialists on hand, a raffle with some great wins, and plenty of barbecue.
