Sweet, Savory and Fun – Tasty Places to Try in Calaveras

A recent look around Calaveras County revealed a bunch of new (and newish) establishments where you can get your fix for tasty treats, pick-me-ups, and home style cooking. It’s the time of year when travel starts to pick up around the county, so we thought you should have this list handy for those strategic stops.

Recently voted by locals as the best bakery in the Motherlode, Villa Bakery is found in Valley Springs near the entrance to La Contenta Golf Course. Try their tiramisu cupcakes or the Cowboy Croissant. Their eclairs are also very popular. It’s a great stop if you’re heading for a hike or outing at Lake Hogan. Open 7:00am-6:00pm Tuesday to Saturday.

Copper Town Square heats up in the summer with their farmers markets and concert series – and happily, there’s Yummy Ha! Ha! – a great little ice cream shop to cool it down a notch. Even if you’re passing by on Highway 4, you can’t miss the picturesque town square, located just off the highway. They’re open from 12:00pm – 7:00pm everyday except Tuesday.

The newest venture of local food entrepreneur Maya Radisich, formerly of Mineral and Roquefort, Butter and Cream Bakery is all about pleasing the palette. A perfect stop on your way through Arnold, try out the cinnamon rolls and blueberry breakfast cake. In the mood for savory? The quiche or rosemary and sea salt focaccia will hit the spot! Open 6:00am-3:00pm, Friday to Tuesday.

As you head up Highway 4 through Avery, you might miss Coop’s Coffee House if you’re not looking out for it. And that would be a shame, because that adorable little A-frame holds a delightful coffee shop with breakfast treats and grab-and-go items from the above mentioned Butter and Cream. Use the drive thru or sit a while on the porch and watch the world go by. Try the BTA – Texas Toast with bourbon smoke tomato jam, avocado and bacon with side of their excellent coffee! Open everyday 6:00am-6:00pm.

The simplicity of the presentation, freshness of the ingredients and friendly staff have all helped turn this little ice cream shop into one of the hottest items in town. But a warning, you may start finding lots of excuses to head to Murphys once you taste it – and you’ll have to fight off small children and grandparents if you want a seat. Open at 12:00pm Thurs – Mon, until 7:00pm Fridays, until 8:00pm Saturdays, Close at 6:00pm all other days.

For all the Irish lore in Murphys, there hasn’t been a proper Irish pub in town – well, that’s about to change. The dream of Murphys native Jessica Lindstrom, who spent ten years living in Europe, is about to open its doors on Main Street as the Murphys Irish Pub. At press time the official date is still somewhere in mid-May, but you can expect this place to be authentic. The chef has been hard at work testing out traditional Irish dishes and the kegs of Irish beers will be wheeling in shortly. Check their Facebook page for updates!

Calaveras County’s newest bakery, located in downtown San Andreas, specializes in bagels, and sandwiches made with bagels. Add to the mix coffee, other baked goods, comfy sofas, free wi-fi and rustic, country-themed decor and you’ve got a great hang-out place. It’s been open for just over 4 months and already the locals are giving it a thumbs up, so be sure to check it out. Open from 7:00am until 3:00pm daily.
