Calaveras Outdoor Recreation: Miokelumne Coast to Crest Trail | EBMUD

Mokelumne Hill Outdoor Recreation is dominated by the Mokelumne River. Wild and scenic designation-eligible, this river is the perfect place to fish, hike, raft and kayak. Public access to the Mokelumne River is available at Big Bar Launch on Hwy 49 just a few miles outside of the historic town. Here, you can launch your kayak, fish and play at the river.

This is also the location of the Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail. To hike it, you’ll need wilderness passes (just $3 each for day use), and it’s absolutely worth the effort because the views are amazing, and if you’re here in spring – the wildflowers are spectacular. Just take a look at this guide to the common wildflowers of the Coast to Crest Trail. You can get trail use permits from EBMUD online. There are 29 miles of continuous trails featuring easy to strenuous section hikes from 4 to 11-1/2 miles.
