Champagne, Locomotives and Wild Animals! A Mothers Day Weekend to Remember, May 10 and 11
Mothers Day is May 11 this year, and brunch on Sunday with mom is always a great way to celebrate her day. We have some fine choices for the mid day meal here in Calaveras, and we thought we’d give you a few extra ideas as well to make an especially fun Mothers Day Weekend in the foothills.
For about the last 15 years, Calaveras County has been home to the Performing Animal Welfare Society or PAWS, which provides refuge for several types of large wildlife – elephants, tigers, lions and bears. During the PAWS spring open house on Saturday May 10, guests can hop on a shuttle bus for a tour around the property outside of San Andreas and get to know some of these remarkable animals – from behind the safety of a large fence, of course. Shuttles will run throughout the event, allowing guests to move at their own pace, snacks and beverages will be provided. You’re welcome to pack your own lunch as well, and PAWS recommends a comfortable pair of walking shoes. All entrance fees from the event help maintain the facility and ensure a luxurious retirement for the rescued animal residents.
Saturday May 10, 11am-2pm
1250 Pool Station Rd, San Andreas, CA 95249
Tickets: 209-745-2606 or online at http://www.pawsweb.org/calendar_of_events.html

You’ll find Saturday yoga classes at either end of the county, in Mokelumne Hill at the Hotel Leger, or Yoga with Colleen in Murphys at Intelligent Body Studio (upstairs from Mad About Shoes on Main Street). Both are open to the public, are by donation and are over before noon, leaving you with the afternoon to get out for say, a guided hike through Calaveras Big Trees State Park at 12:30pm, included with park admission or a guided historical walking tour of Murphys. Starts at 10am at the Old Timers Museum.
Did you know there was a National Train Day? Indeed, and it’s happening Saturday May 10 at Railtown1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown. Spend the afternoon exploring seldom seen vintage railroad equipment and take a ride on a steam or diesel locomotive through the Gold Country. Or, pay a visit on Sunday for the Mothers Day Train Rides, with special treats for moms aboard the regularly scheduled excursions – definitely a fun choice if you’re in town with train loving kids.
Prices: Adults $15, Youth 6-17, $8
