Spicer Reservoir

Kid friendly

Spicer Reservoir is about 8 miles long, and half of the reservoir is in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness Area. Power boats are allowed on the west end (non-Wilderness), but have a 5 mph speed limit, so generally aren’t a problem. This reservoir has a rugged, rocky shoreline and great views. Nesting osprey can be seen in the summer. Fishing is allowed with license.

The winds can get rather strong, so be prepared. And the reservoir is at over 6000′ in altitude.

  1. is spicer open to public in winter, driveable in 2 wheel drive hvehicle? boat launch open?

    • Hello James –
Nope, Spicer is still closed to drive in traffic as it typically is from November through May. Only way to get to Spicer is by snowmobile, skis or snowshoes. I don’t recommend a snowmobile because the snow is too thin with a bunch of asphalt showing in a number of places.
With the mild winter we have been having I would not be surprised if they open the boat launch earlier this year.
      Regards,
      Sandy

  2. Hello –

Given the mild winter, is the road to Spicer Meadows reservoir going to be open before late May?
My understanding is lake fishing is open year round and the road must be clear of snow by now, given the extremely low rain/snow fall…

    Thanks,
    John

Is Spicer reservoir affected by the wildfire?

  4. Does Spicer allow dogs?

    • I believe they are allowed on leash. And, of course, as a pet owner knows, cleaning up behind your dog is always expected and appreciated by all. If you wish to get more information, please contact the Calaveras Ranger District office at 209-795-1381. For more information regarding pet friendly places, visit http://www.gocalaveras.com. You will see a paw print next to those businesses that are “pet friendly”. Have a great visit!!
