Bodega del Sur Winery is a family run winery that produces premium California wines available in top restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as the Sierra Foothills. Their wines are also available from their tasting room in historic downtown Murphys, just opposite the Murphys Historic Hotel. Specializing in Spanish varietals, created by one of Calaveras County’s top winemakers, Chuck Hovey, Bodega del Sur’s wines include Tempranillo, Tanat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmesi among their reds, while their whites include Garnacha Blanco.
The tasting room is beautifully decorated with one-of-a-kind artisanal pieces including a stained glass window based on the design of their label, made by a fan of their wine. Their bar is made of massive, hand-crafted jars called cocuchas, made by villagers in the remote Purepecha Indian village of Cocucho, Mexico. These are topped by a copper-clad bar which is lit overhead by a uniquely designed wrought iron fixture with blown glass, poppy-shaped light shades.
The beauty of the tasting room complements the careful crafting of the wines and Bodega del Sur Winery’s goal to give every visitor an outstanding experience, not only of their wines, but also of the customer service provided by their friendly staff.
