Calaveras Air Fair: What’s included?

It’s an eclectic day of fancy planes, entertainment and your chance to take the family for a plane ride for just a few dollars.  Think of it like a car show for airplanes, where plane owners from around the region fly in for the day and line up on the tarmac for spectators to admire and step inside. Oh, and of course, it also include a classic car show, and live music.

Meanwhile, local pilots will be ferrying passengers up into the sky for 15-minute rides,  throughout the day experimental and specialty planes will be performing flyovers and Mountain Flyer’s Radio Control Club display model airplanes

Admission is free but there is a small fee ($5 for kids, $10 for adults) for plane rides, and that goes to help fund the local Young Eagles Program, which gives people ages 8-17 the chance to go flying with volunteer pilots.  Meals throughout the day from a variety of Calaveras County non-profits include a pancake breakfast, and chicken-in-a-barrel.

The Calaveras Community Band is staged in one of the airplane hangars, and there’s usually one other local band providing the musical backdrop for the day.  The airport sits atop a ridge about 4.5 miles south of San Andreas on Highway 49, and they have a shuttle that will bring you from your car to the tarmac.
