No trip to Murphys is complete without stopping in at JoMa’s Artisan Ice Cream and trying one of their small-batch, hand-crafted creations made with love and care. And JoMa’s goal? To make guests feel like family, and to serve the most uniquely handcrafted and delicious ice cream they have ever tasted. With hand-made waffle cones and bowls made in-store, 16 flavors of ice cream and 4 flavors of sorbet, and intermittently, one-of-a-kind creations, we think they’ve succeeded.
Take your ice-creams on your exploration through charming downtown Murphys, sit outside the shop or at their bar where you can watch the world go by in this picturesque Gold Rush town. If you’ve been shopping, take a weight off achy feet and enjoy a sweet treat that’s become a massive favorite of locals and visitors alike.
Family-oriented owners Don and JoAnn named the store “JoMa”, the name JoAnn’s grandchildren have bestowed on her. She comes from Portuguese and Swiss heritage, her grandparents having immigrated to America to start a dairy business. Memories of drawing a sweet strawberry through cream-topped ice cold milk, are still fresh in JoMa’s mind:
“The whole family would take turns cranking the handle of the White Mountain ice cream maker. Even though I was the youngest, I always wanted to be the one that could turn it the longest.”
All ingredients used are as close to natural as possible. Their state certified factory is located nearby in Hathaway Pines.
