Twisted Oak Winery specializes in award-winning wines from varietals grown in Calaveras and surrounding foothills and are the purveyors of the highest quality rubber chickens. Their wines are made from grape varieties native to Spain, Italy and Southern France. The name and label of the winery is inspired by a California Blue Oak located at their Vallecito Twisted Oak Winery Vineyards. Both of their tasting rooms, here in historic downtown Murphys, and at their vineyards in Vallecito, feature humorous gifts for sale. Enjoy their pretty garden out back for wine tasting.
Twisted has won “Best of 209” two years in a row. Twisted Oak has been recognized by the Best of 209 voters with GOLD for Winery.
If you’re heading through Vallecito on your way to or from Murphys, drive up to their vineyard tasting room via the unpaved “Rubber Chicken National Forest” for punny signage to get you giggling. And when you taste the wines be sure to read the labels; they’re half the fun. Their Vallecito vineyard is the venue for their Twisted Oak Concert Series which takes place each summer – an outdoor venue with gorgeous views of the sun setting behind the stage and the vineyards beyond.

Award winning Twisted Oak Winery wins yet more honors at the 2013 Riverside International Wine Competition. Their 2009 “River of Skulls” won a Gold medal, and also earned Best of Class for a wine based on the Mourvedre grape. The River of Skulls is made from 100% Mourvedre grapes grown at the Dalton Vineyard near Angels Camp in Calaveras County.
Their 2009 “The Spaniard” also won a Gold medal this year. The Spaniard is their signature blend made from Tempranillo, Graciano, and Garnacha grapes grown in their own vineyards at the winery in Vallecito, Calaveras County.
One of Calaveras County’s premier wine makers, Twisted Oak was awarded 50 points by Wine Enthusiast Magazine in its Top 100 Wines 2012 list for their 2009 Torcido Garnacha. Here’s what Wine Enthusiast said about the wine:
“What a wine. It tries to intimidate. At first, by its bottle size and alcohol level, but in the glass this 100% Garnacha is like a purring kitten—well a purring 20-pound Maine Coon cat, joyous in its pretty red fruit, and its earthy, meaty, vanilla and cinnamon toast range of goodness. All lush, Twisted Oak’s Torcido is, like a retro soap opera, brave and beautiful.”
