Wine Country on Foot: Why to Go Now…

Sunset Magazine Day Trip Pick: Murphys, CA

Pick up the August 2013 issue of Sunset Magazine and you’re going to want to hop in the car and head to Murphys, CA right now…before everybody else does.

It’s not the first time that this little town in the heart of Calaveras County was compared to the Napa of 40 years ago.  But it’s true.  Murphys has got small town charm, trendy boutiques, under-the-radar top chefs who are cooking up amazing grub, upscale lodging and 20+ wineries with libations that only the lucky folks have discovered (so far). Oh, and it’s all found in a span of a few blocks.

But what Murphys has that Napa doesn’t (besides its walk-ability) is its proximity to the ample outdoor recreation hiding in the high country.  Imagine yourself hiking through a giant sequoia grove in the morning and afterward enjoying an eclectic town, tasting wine all afternoon.  Then, settling down to a gourmet dinner before retiring for the evening in a lakeside cabin.  Or in the winter, throwing down some early morning tracks at an off-the-beaten path ski resort before a day of wine tasting.

Talk about a wine country vacation that offers so much more than just tasting and touring. A trip to Murphys can please the whole family, any time of the year with ample recreation and pampering.  It’s not just for the foodies and winos out there.  Although, with the amount of tasting rooms and restaurants that have popped up over the past few years, they certainly wouldn’t be bored either.

  1. I will get the magazine and share with friends. In addition to all the great spots in Murphys and on the mountain it always bears mention of the events happening all the time. The many food, music and art events sponsored by our 32 wineries are really changing this area into an exciting and interesting place to live and play.
