Calaveras Big Trees campgrounds might be the most beautiful you’ve ever stayed in. Imagine camping amongst thousand year old giant sequoia trees in a cool, High Sierra campsite located at a 4,000-ft elevation. The scenery is gorgeous, the giant sequoias spectacular, the fragrance of pines and incense cedars glorious, and the wildlife abundant. In addition, camping at Big Trees gives you access to over 6,400 acres of forest, the Stanislaus River and Beaver Creek, two groves of giant sequoias, a visitors center and museum.

Bringing your dog? Dogs are welcome to stay in the campgrounds on a leash no longer than 6 feet and at night must be in your tent or in an enclosed vehicle. You can walk your dog(s) on any paved area, but they are not allowed in the woods in general. However, there are several miles of fire roads for you and your dog to enjoy but you will not be able to see any of the giant sequoias from these roads.

Staying at Calaveras Big Trees Campgrounds gives you access to several miles of established trail the park including the North Grove Trail, the South Grove Trail, Lava Bluff Trail and Bradley Trail. In addition, the Stanislaus River and Beaver Creek run through the park with opportunities for swimming and fishing. There are also six picnic areas.
The 120 sites in the campgrounds, generally available May – September, include:
- Two main developed campgrounds: the North Grove and Oak Hollow. Each site comes with a picnic table, bear-proof locker for storing your food & supplies, metal fire pit with grill and a water spigot. Flush toilets and pay showers are nearby.
- Two group campgrounds – Upper and Lower
- Two environmental campground areas featuring several campsites – no pets allowed
