And of course, as the gateway to the High Sierra, there are many outstanding camping options. The closest are the campgrounds and cabin rentals at Calaveras Big Trees State Park (who wouldn’t want to sleep amongst giant sequoia trees?) and Wa Ka Luu Hep Yoo campground in the Sourgrass recreation area, right next to the north fork of the spectacular Stanislaus River.
