World Pro Ski Tour

The World Pro Ski Tour (WPST) has chosen Skyline Bear Valley Resort for their only California Tour stop again in 2024. Four races (2 men’s and 2 women’s) will be held February 15-18, 2024 and attracts skiers from 15 countries including former and current NCAA, World Cup and Olympic athletes. Dual Slalom and Dual Giant Slalom Races for both men and women award $500,000 in prize money though the course of the WPST season. The mountain crew at Bear Valley built two race courses on a run known as Feather Duster, creating a world class race run.

In the late 1960s and 70s, the mountain was well known for its celebrity Pro/Am, some put on by movie legend Lloyd Bridges. “When we saw Bear Valley this summer, we were blown away by the vertical runs, the 360 views at the top and the professionalism of the staff,” commented Jon J. Franklin, CEO of the WPST. “We are so excited to be back at Bear Valley which was always a highlight of the venues on the historic Pro Tour.”  The World Pro Ski Tour is broadcast on CBS Sports, FloLive.TV, Facebook Live and more, while a syndicated docuseries “Life In Between the Gates,” airs on NBC Sports, Amazon Prime, OutsideTv, AT&T Sports and more.

The resort will be open for skiing and spectators. Visit bearvalley.com to get the latest information.

Calaveras Underground

California Cavern | Dave Bunnell
Middle Earth Expedition | Dave Bunnell

What a great way to get a little closer to the one you love! Go underground and check out the three different cave systems right here in Calaveras.

Mercer Caverns, one of three caves in Calaveras County, is open for guided tours, year round. See deep underground in this cavern filled with a large array of cave formations like stalactities, stalagmites and flowstones. This cavern also won the Paris World’s Fair for its display of the rare cavern formation: flos feri.

Moaning Caverns Adventure Park holds California’s deepest cave chamber, where you can descend deep underground on a guided walk tour.  Gemstone mining at the custom flume system is always fun for the whole family and cracking geodes is a big hit with rock hounds of all ages. Reservations are strongly recommended for all activities. The park is open Thursday through Monday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

California Cavern, originally called Mammoth Cave, was California’s first show cave and is its longest cavern system. Depending on the season, the guided cavern walk tour can be 45 minutes to 80 minutes long featuring an enchanting trail with beautiful crystalline cave formations in historical and recently discovered pristine areas. The cavern walking tour takes you through several passageways into multiple chambers on a trail system. On the way, you’ll see a wide variety of beautiful white, cream and caramel colored crystalline cave formations including stalactites, stalagmites, cave popcorn, flowstones and helictites, while also learning about the cavern’s fascinating discovery and early uses. One outstanding feature of this cave is its extensive labyrinth of wild, unlit passageways and crawl-ways which you can explore on two different extended cave expeditions. These trips are not recommended for the claustrophobic, but for those who don’t have a problem with tight spaces they are incredibly fun and distinctively unique.
