Vacations in Calaveras’ High Sierra are usually based in Arnold lodging – and for good reason. There are multiple real estate offices offering vacation rentals from the cosy to the spectacular to accommodate your couples only romantic weekend to a week with your best friends and their kids.
For one of the most romantic bed & breakfasts in the entire county, we recommend the Arnold Black Bear Inn Their reviews alone show the quality of the customer service they provide – and the accommodations – outstanding. For quality and affordable options right on the highway, the Meadowmont Lodge is a great option, as is the Arnold Timberline Lodge a little further east, but still in town. Mountain Retreat Resort gives you the freedom of a vacation rental, but includes amenities like their clubhouse, pool, jacuzzi, game room, and mini theater. Plus this option also gives you access to Sequoia Woods Country Club’s 18-hole championship golf course and quality restaurant and bar.
For your haunted option, consider renting the Dorrington Hotel for your group. It’s one of the oldest hotels in the county and has a deliciously spooky reputation.
And of course, as the gateway to the High Sierra, there are many outstanding camping options. The closest are the campgrounds and cabin rentals at Calaveras Big Trees State Park (who wouldn’t want to sleep amongst giant sequoia trees?) and Wa Ka Luu Hep Yoo campground in the Sourgrass recreation area, right next to the north fork of the spectacular Stanislaus River.
